Just because you can age wine in bourbon barrels doesn’t mean you should

The first time I stood in a wine store and saw a label advertising “aged in bourbon barrels,” I just thought, “Why?” Don’t get me wrong. I like bourbon. And, of course, I love wine. But to me they seemed like the points of the compass for Rudyard Kipling. “Never the twain shall meet.” Yet there on the shelves were cabernet sauvignon aged in bourbon barrels, merlot in rum barrels, even sauvignon blanc in tequila barrels.
